Estoril and Cascais Riviera Golf Courses

Vergroot afbeelding Golf Estoril and Cascais Golf Estoril and Cascais

The Estoril Coast is one of the most sought after resorts for golfing in Portugal. The reasons are plain to see: courses designed by leading architects, with excellent conditions and infra structures complemented by a hotel and cultural offer that makes your stay even more enjoyable.

  • Lisbon Sports Club

Although the history of this members club goes back to the late 19th century, the current course near Belas has been in existence since 1962. Originally a 9- then a 14-hole layout, its final four holes were completed in 1992. Although short in overall length, there are many tricky holes where local knowledge is a bonus, and wayward shots are usually severely penalised. An interesting course in tranquil surroundings.

    Belas Clube de Campo

Built in a 462-hectare residential complex, this Roquemore designed course is a championship class course, with fairways meandering through undulating terrain in hills west of Lisbon. From its high vantage point, the clubhouse affords outstanding views, and the Sintra hills can be seen in the background. The course includes many memorable holes such as the par-4 ninth called the Amphitheatre with a green set perilously into a slope on the edge of a lake.

    Estoril

This is the well-known historical course, opened in 1945, where the Portuguese Open was held 19 times between 1953 and 1974 and once more in 1987. Owned by the local Hotel Palácio, the layout is short but tight, and requires some local knowledge in order to score well, but there are birdie opportunities for the straight hitter. The site also includes a short 9-holer called the Blue Course, ideal for both beginners and experienced players alike.

    Holes: 18+9 Length: 5,313 & 2,379 metres
    Par: 69 & 34

    Quinta da Beloura

Opened in 1994, the Beloura course is laid out in gently undulated terrain within a residential complex between Sintra and Estoril. Although it is a par-73 it is not overly long and it is well landscaped, with thousands of new trees and shrubs having been planted during construction. There are several water hazards and many bunkers, meaning that course management is the order of the day. There are some accommodation facilities on site for visitors.

    Penha Longa Golf Resort

Built on a 14th century estate with many ancient buildings and monuments, this resort has an 18-hole course, the Atlantic, plus a 9-hole one called the Monastery, both designed by Trent Jones, Jr. The former is classified No. 31 in Golf Worlds top 100 in Europe, and has been the venue of many prestige events, including two Portuguese Opens (1994/5). Enjoys majestic views over Estoril and Cascais towards the ocean. The Monastery is a pleasant short course, but does have a few testing holes.

    Quinta da Marinha

Near the coast just west of Cascais is this complex with villas and 5-star hotel. Unusually, the outward 9-hole loop, which is built back from the coast, has four par-3s and three par-5s. The back nine are laid out over the cliffs with beautiful vistas out to sea. Scoring can become difficult when the wind blows on the exposed holes and there are many bunkers and water hazards to contend with throughout the entire course.

    Par: 71

    Oitavos

Located in the Sintra-Cascais Natural Park, this wonderful course was built according to strict environmental protection rules based on a design by famed US architect Arthur Hills. The unique natural landscape has been retained, and there are both links and pinetree-lined holes. Opened in 2001, the course has already hosted the European PGA Portuguese Open, Seniors and Europro tournaments to much acclaim.
